YOUR OBJECTIVE: To get there early, work HARD, and stay late. The job is easy if everyone does his or her part. If you cannot do the job you find yourself assigned to in the following orders of the day, SAY SO NOW so we don't send a posse out lookin' for ya. If you fail to show up at your duty station we expect that you will have found a replacement for your job. The pushes are available to help you.

The first Rotary auction & sale took place in 1936. The first dinner banquet was held that same year. The first BBQ was held in 1938. The last BBQ was cooked in 1998, when air quality and food preparation health standards forced the elimination of the fire pit BBQ.
SECTION ONE
SALE REGISTRATION AND ADMINISTRATION
MASTERMIND BIG PUSH James (Scouter) Hurst 810-1231
AUCTIONEER
Mr. Stan Deupree has been performing the duties admirably for nigh on several years now Sam (I am) Dunlap has extended, and Mr. Deupree has accepted, our invitation to serve as Auctioneer once again.
SPOTTERS
Work the infield and holler at the auctioneer so that no bid goes unnoticed. Report to the Event Center right after the Buyers Dinner (no later than 1:45p.m.) Every auction needs someone to be the final authority on sayin' just who bought what from whom and for how much. These spotters are just that. We won't need all six at a time; three at a time in rotation will let you take a break and stay fresh!
Chris (Mulch) Moudry 797-5655

Cam (Epicenter) Curtiss 882-0025

SALES CLERKS:
When the gavel falls and the Buyer Catchers begin their sprint, these Clerks have a very short interval in which to Fill out Forms---Record Data--- Find the Sales Slip---Calculate the Weight times Price per Pound--- and have the bill ready for the BUYER when the CATCHER delivers it all back to her/him.
Head Clerk Rotary Jean (Phingers) Phillips 883-3401
Assistant Clerk Rotary Dianne (Sparerib) Spires 882-6630
Thanks again to Bill (Stronghold) Castle for supplying the many volunteers needed to keep the checks flowing to the kids and the books balanced for the club.
SORTERS & LOADERS:
This alert crew will check each auctioned animal's lot number and ear tag as it leaves the sales ring and help the 4-H leaders sort these animals and make sure they go to the proper truck for transport.
In addition, it will be very important that a crew of animal herders and gatekeepers be on hand throughout the sale (the kids need help and we need to help them). This crew, and the work they will be doing, is the reason we can now hold the sale in the Event Center, along with the Buyers Dinner. As the sale tends to run many hours, the crew is split into three shifts. First Shift Meet with the 4H and FFA leaders in the Event Center at 1:45 PM. Second shift shows up at 4:30 PM and Third shift shows up at 7:15 PM and learn as you go.

AUDIT: To hell with the budget. It's un-American. These clerks sum up the outgo, make an itemized list in TWO copies: Give one to the BIG PUSH for use next year and the other to the Treasurer so he can cipher the exorbitant rates for next year.

PUBLICITY:
This talented group of writers will provide the local media with lots of phonetically spelled incredibles and misspelled fascinatings about the goings-on, always playing up the kids and buyers. Dave (Recliner) Carlson will see that we get plenty of ink.

Their job is to say howdy and collect the dinner invitations so folks can get in line and get some grub. Since the price of the VIP dinner has gone way up. It is more important than ever that our greeters help us control the partakers in the party. We want to make every VIP BUYER feel more than welcome, while we let it be known that we can't feed all their kids. Help those with children understand that the kids are welcome to bring their own burgers or dogs to the table to join Mom and Dad for the meal.

How We Got Here:
Rotary's first Livestock Sale was held in August of 1936 at the old open top sales arena. On the evening prior, Rotary hosted a banquet for exhibitors at the Willard Hotel. The same arrangement was used in 1937. Among the first years' exhibitors were some future Rotary members. To recall some of them: Alvin Cheyne; Roy Gooding; Roy Whitlatch; Bill Ganong; Frank Ganong; Joe Keller; and myself. Surely there are more.
All barbecues WERE the present Basque pit-style, imported from Andorra to the Shirk ranch in Eastern Oregon. Joe Shirk, Gib Fleet, Bill Carter, Paul Pittenger, and several other COPCO (now PP&L) guys cooked the meat at the old COPCO ranch. That ranch became Dick and Ben Henzel's Tulana Farms on Williamson River. The original ORDERS OF THE DAY were first written for that first barbecue, August 1938. Nelson Reed and Cap Collier seem to be the original authors. Nelson sold Caterpillar and Cap had logged in Swan Lake valley prior to his Swan Lake Moulding Co and Collier Park.
Though I can't recall all of the participants, Frank Ganong, Bill Ganong, myself, Fred D. Ehlers, then another round of Ganong, Ganong, and Landrum once wrote these words of instructions.
The text of the orders is now a montage, with various words and phrases enduring from each of the authors' pens.
A recent overlook of expenses through the years shows that the total money spent to stage the affair is around a half million dollars. Sale proceeds accumulating to the young exhibitors will sum to some $6 - 7 million. ‘Me only records which exist on sales performances are in the H + N morgue in the Klamath County Museum.

WHERE ARE WE GOING
An addendum to Van's "How We Got Here"
The history of the Rotary-4H-FFA livestock sale is replete with necessitated over the years by many internal and external factors.
A "Buyers Dinner" preceded the first several Auctions. First at the Willard Hotel and then in the form of a Basque style Pit BBQ. Over time, others were invited to the BBQ in addition to the Buyers. These were probably as thank-yous, but some were undoubtedly politically motivated. Always with the idea in mind to encourage buyers for the livestock auction.
Over the years, the BBQ progressed to a large-scale mostly free meal for nearly 2000, very few of which attended or purchased any livestock at the sale. In as much as this was getting away from the spirit and intent of the event, and in view of the technical difficulties encountered vis-à-vis the DEQ and the Health Department, it was elected to return to a "Buyers Dinner" in 1999. Hence, going full circle back to the original intent of the founders.
